Colgate Eco-Classica Crib Mattress Review & Giveaway (RV: $149)

Colgate is a third generation family owned company that manufactures the highest quality crib mattresses in the country. They have received many awards and awareness for making the finest mattresses, changing pads and foam pads. The recognition is well-deserved, too. They have been the Baby and Child magazine readers choice winner for five years in a row, ranked #1 in a leader consumer report and have the Greenguard Certification.

A little bit of Colgate's history: Sol Wolkin (a US Army Force veteran) and his wife Anne started Colgate Mattress Atlanta Corp. in 1955 from just a $1,500 loan. In the beginning, they only had one employee that was not a family member, although to this day, they might consider their employees the same as family as most have been with them for more than a decade, and some have been around for over 30 years. Though the founders of Colgate have recently passed, the company has thrived and remained family owned. I would like to personally thank Dennis Wolkin, grandson of Sol & Anne, for giving me the opportunity to review this product. He has been very helpful and informative throughout this process.


For this review, I received the Eco-Classica crib mattress (retail value $189). Not to sound too cheesy, but it has been life changing. Before using this one, I had accepted a hand-me-down mattress. It was comfy & clean and I thought that was all we needed. After switching them out, I really saw a difference. The Eco-Classica was much more firm. At first I thought that Evie might not sleep as well, being on a firmer mattress, and not be as comfortable. The first night I layed her down in it, she slept for 5 hours without waking up (compared to the 2-3 hours she normally goes at first). I actually ran into her room thinking something was wrong! And there she was, sleeping like a baby, butt straight up in the air! She has slept unbelievably better since the switch. If she could just look at me and say "finally!" I think she would.

"Colgate is proud to be a US manufacturer located in the heart of the south." For 55 years they have stood out by keep their manufacturing here in the US, in Atlanta, Georgia. They understand the importance of a crib mattress, as it is where a baby will spend 70% of their time, and 50% of a toddler's. Purchasing a crib mattress should not be on a whim, it should be thoroughly researched so you know what you're getting. While talking to Dennis about which mattress to review, I had mentioned that I would like to try the Eco-Classica because I was worried chemicals in the mattress. I had been under the impression that you were never supposed to accept a hand-me-down mattress because they could contain harmful chemicals that may be linked to SIDS. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome has devastated many families, and the cause is still unknown. And this is what he said:

"I noted in your comments that you were concerned about chemicals in older mattresses. None of our mattresses have any dangerous chemicals in them. There are a lot of companies that will try to sell you baby products based on dear, especially in a purchase as important as a mattress. We refuse to do that. All of our products are Greenguard Certified for indoor air quality in children and school rooms. That is true for the non-organic ones as well. The most important safety features in any mattress is how firm the mattress is, and the second is how well it fits the crib."
